Second technical seminar on Catalan vaults

The gathering will take place on 28 of 29 September in Castellar de n’Hug

The Asland Cement Museum in Castellar de n’Hug and the National Science and Technology Museum of Catalonia (mNACTEC) are for the second year organising the technical seminar on "Catalan Vaults" on 28 and 29 September in Castellar de n’Hug. The aim of the seminar is to promote and showcase the heritage value of this construction technique, and to serve as a forum for reflection by speakers and attendees about Catalan vaults as an exemplary case of a traditional technique that remains relevant today.

The first day's session will address matters of theory, discussing such topics as the origins of this architectural technique, the different materials, the structural specificities and construction, restoration and repair techniques.

The second day will feature a practical session, with a timbrel vault workshop during which the attendees will play their part in building a scale vault similar to those found at the Asland factory.

The Asland Cement Museum in Castellar de n’Hug is a mNACTEC site housed in the former Asland cement factory in Clot del Moro. Constructed between 1901 and 94, it is a first-rate architectural landmark built from local limestone, a metal structure and timbrel vaults using Portland cement, a system patented in the United States by Rafael Guastavino.
