MNACTEC receives collection of doctor and bacteriologist Jaume Ferran

The Ferran i Rico family have gifted documentation about Dr Ferran's personal and professional life

The National Science and Technology Museum of Catalonia (MNACTEC) has received the collection of the Catalan doctor and bacteriologist Jaume Ferran i Clua (1851-1929).

The holding contains elements of Dr Ferran's personal and family documentation, along with scientific and medical documents. It comprises 1,636 photographs, 1,116 textual and bibliographical documents, 10 plans, 3 graphical documents, 1 audiovisual document in digital format, and 13 objects.

The acquisition of this material was made possible by a gift from the Ferran i Rico family, supplementing and extending the documentation already held at the MNACTEC about the Catalan bacteriologist.

Jaume Ferran i Clua (Corbera d’Ebre, 1851 - Barcelona, 1929) was a noted Catalan doctor and bacteriologist, who conducted the first vaccinations anywhere in the Spanish state. He stood out for his research in the field of epidemiology, preparing the first vaccine against cholera, and others to combat typhus and tuberculosis. He headed the Barcelona Municipal Microbiology Laboratory, and in 1907 was honoured by the Académie des Sciences in Paris.
