International industrial heritage gathering

Around forty representatives of different institutions, museums and associations connected with industrial heritage from all round Spain, Andorra, Italy and Portugal gathered yesterday at the National Museum of Science and Technology of Catalonia (mNACTEC) with the aim of increasing the presence of industrial heritage museums and visitors centres in the European Route of Industrial Heritage (ERIH) while laying the foundations for the establishment of a number of European regional routes.

At present the mNACTEC (together with the Agbar Water Museum in Cornellà de Llobregat and the Almadén Mining Park) is one of only three anchor points in Spain on this major route for the promotion, showcasing and dissemination of Europe's most notable industrial heritage. The mNACTEC is also the organiser of the Catalan ERIH network, made up of six sectional museums belonging to the mNACTEC Territorial Structure.

The delegates at the gathering scheduled a future coordination meeting and agreed as to the need to create an international structure and coordination for the protection and safekeeping of industrial heritage, and to explain to the different public authorities the social value of this contemporary heritage. The event was attended by representatives of Catalonia, Andalusia, Asturias, Castile-Leon, Castile-La Mancha, the Basque Country, Madrid, Murcia, Aragon, Andorra, Italy, Portugal and other locations.
