Increased number of visits to the Cement Museum

Between January and May 77% more visitors than in the same period in 2014 were recorded

The Asland Cement Museum in Castellar de n'Hug registered a total of 3092 visitors between 1 January and 31 May 2016. The figure represents an increase of 77% compared the same period the previous year, when the heritage facility welcomed 1745 visitors.

The increase in the number of visitors this year is partly due to the consolidation and increased profile of the combined tourist offering including the Cement Train, the Artigas Gardens and the Cement Museum, which is generating interest on the part of travel agencies. Over the 1 May long weekend, the Museum received a particularly substantial flow of visitors, helping to increase the numbers.

As for the profile of those visiting during the five months, of the 3092 visitors, 1094 of them were part of a group (mainly tourists and pensioners, and also school pupils). The remainder (1998), correspond to the general public, above all families.

The Asland cement factory at the Clot del Moro site in the town of Castellar de n'Hug, closed down in the 1970s. The remains visible today still reveal the spectacular nature of one of the most outstanding manufacturing complexes of Catalan industrialisation, standing within a unique natural setting. The factory began a new life in 2002, becoming the Asland Cement Factory of Castellar de n’Hug, thanks to the creation of a visitor centre and an external route around the industrial ruins of the factory.

The Asland industrial cement complex is one of the three sites of the Museum of Science and Technology of Catalonia (mNACTEC), and forms a part of its Territorial System, comprising 26 centres explaining the industrialisation of Catalonia. In 2005 it was declared an Asset of National Cultural Interest by the Autonomous Regional Government of Catalonia.
