The radio enters the home

The publication, available only in the digital version, aims to explain the usage, types and impact of loudspeakers on radio broadcasting during the 1920s, while also illustrating the impact of design on one of the first household appliances.

From 1921 onwards, radio receivers gradually evolved from an artefact that resembled a collection of scientific devices into the integrated radios of 1930, incorporating a speaker alongside the electronics, in one single designer object that became a principle of marketing. A perspective on this decade suggests that radio technology travelled a long way in a very short period of time.
